Institute presentation

The Heidelberg University Hospital is the largest orthopaedic university hospital in Germany hosting a 2000 m2 of research facility with cell and tissue engineering research labs, a biomechanic group and an animal facility for small to large animal models. Wiltrud Richter (> 135 publications, h-index 32, > 3100 citations) is director of the Research Centre for Experimental Orthopaedics and leads an interdisciplinary team of scientists including biologists, material scientists, bioengineers and veterinarian surgeons. She is the program director of the 2013 World Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS). Her group is specialised in stem cell biology and tissue engineering in the context of cartilage repair with a publication record of >85 publications in the last 10 years.

Sebastien Hagmann is a trained orthopaedic surgeon. He is experienced with in vivo animal studies on cartilage repair in the mini pig and was already involved in several studies of orthotopic chondrocyte transplantation. Supported by a veterinary surgeon he will perform and supervise the animal studies and will together with Wiltrud Richter contribute to the histological data evaluation.
