Institute presentation

The Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) at QUT is a state-of-the-art facility purpose-built for multidisciplinary research, which houses over 400 researchers with diverse backgrounds working to solve biomedical problems. In addition to cell culture, biochemistry and imaging facilities, the QUT team, led by Prof. Hutmacher, has established a world-class biofabrication facility with melt and solution electrospinning, electrospraying, and bioextrusion capabilities at IHBI. Prof. Hutmacher is a world-leader in the field of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine. He is particularly well known for his contribution to the design, fabrication, characterisation and clinical application of scaffolds by using rapid prototyping technologies in combination with computational modelling. Dr. Travis Klein leads the Cartilage Regeneration Laboratory and has significant experience in cartilage tissue engineering with emphases on recapitulating the zonal properties of articular cartilage, developing biofunctional hydrogels, and mechanically stimulating engineered tissues. Adjunct Associate Professor Paul Dalton is an expert in electrospinning and hydrogel design for various biomedical applications. The QUT team will apply all of these techniques and experience to ensure success of several WPs. Prof. Hutmacher has been instrumental in the formation of the HydroZONES consortium and will continue to play a major role in overseeing the project and ensuring the milestones are reached.
