The Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (UKW-TERM), led by Prof. Walles, develops 3D organ-like cell cultures and tissue equivalents for testing or for reconstruction purposes. A two-layered human 3D skin equivalent has been patented (EP1290145B1) and has been certified for the testing of the biocompatibility of medicinal devices (DIN ISO 10993-5). A vascularised scaffold (BioVaSc) has been established for the generation of complex tissue models including an equivalent of a functional blood vessel network. Currently developed first prototypes of vascularised tissue models include human liver, intestine and trachea models. The group has great experience with automatization of TE processes also according to GMP conditions and at large scale with integrated fully automatized systems (http://www.tissue-factory.com/).

The Department of Trauma, Hand, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (UKW-TRAUMA) represents a Level I Trauma Center with a broad research spectrum from bench to bedside. Experimental research, led by Prof. Blunk, focuses on regenerative medicine in the area of cartilage, bone, muscle and adipose tissue, including biomechanical models investigating the integration of cartilage tissue. Experimental labs include state-of-the-art cell culture facilities, cell and molecular biology analytical techniques, small animal facilities, and biomechanical testing equipment.
