Institute presentation

The Mathematical Institute (MI) of the University of Oxford is one of the leading mathematics departments in the world, with a significant research profile in central areas of contemporary mathematical research, including its applications in biology, medicine and industry. The Department of Computer Science also enjoys a strong international reputation for excellence in research in many branches of computer science, including Computational Biology. Established in 2005, the Computational Biology Group (CBG) has particular strength in developing bespoke computational simulation tools, based on rigorous mathematical and scientific computing principles, to solve problems arising in the life sciences. In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, Oxford was ranked first in the UK across the mathematical sciences as a whole and third in computer science.
